Pasadena : The Banker for the Poor
A banker who lends money to the very poor to help them become entrepreneurs will speak tonight at Polytechnic School.
Muhammad Yunus, founder and president of Bangladesh’s Grameen Bank, makes tiny loans to landless women to start sewing, livestock-raising or furniture businesses in a Moslem society where women traditionally do not handle money.
Yunus’ bank has influenced other “trickle-up” lending programs, including one in Arkansas supported by President Clinton and his wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton.
The talk is sponsored by the Pasadena chapter of RESULTS--a Washington-based nonprofit organization dedicated to ending world hunger. The meeting will be at the Garfield Auditorium, Polytechnic School, 1030 E. California Blvd., at 7 p.m. A charge of $10, or $5 for students and senior citizens, is requested.
