New State Law and Higher Parking Fines
Approximately a year ago you published an article about officials from neighboring cities meeting to discuss common problems, specifically traffic. This sounded like something that could be very beneficial.
Now we know what the meetings accomplished; parking fines that doubled, couched in terms of “administrative ordinances to implement a new state law” (Times, May 6).
Yes, I know a new state law transfers the collection and appeals process for parking violations to a new civil system jointly administered by Culver City, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills and West Hollywood, and presumably these increases are to cover expenses of the new bureaucracy.
As a resident, what upsets me is that they don’t tell you that in addition to covering expenses, they are also increasing the city’s revenue by double. Talk about double-speak. No wonder people don’t trust our elected officials. I wonder what this will do to ease our traffic problems. Enough cooperation between cities already! Don’t do us any more favors.
