NATIONAL LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Young’s 18th Consecutive Loss Sinks Mets

Anthony Young tied a Met record by losing his 18th consecutive decision when Mike Lansing singled home the winning run during the 12th inning and gave the Expos a 4-3 victory over New York at Montreal on Sunday.

The last-place Mets have lost six of seven and 16 of 20, and finished their trip with a 1-5 record. They have lost 10 of 12 on the road.

Young (0-4) is in the midst of the longest losing streak in the major leagues since Mike Parrott lost 18 in a row in 1980-81 with the Seattle Mariners.

Jeff Fassero (2-1) pitched two scoreless innings. Starter Ken Hill gave up solo home runs to Kent during the second, Bobby Bonilla during the sixth and Todd Hundley with two out in the ninth.

Eric Hillman, a replacement in the Met rotation for the injured Sid Fernandez, gave up three runs and five hits in six innings.

San Francisco 9, San Diego 4--Darren Lewis drove in three runs with three hits, including two triples, and the Giants roughed up Wally Whitehurst in his debut at San Diego.

Bill Swift (5-1) won his fifth consecutive game as the first-place Giants won for the fifth time in six games. The Padres have lost six of seven.

Whitehurst (0-2) was leading, 2-0, on a two-hitter when the Giants scored four runs with four singles, two walks, two errors and a hit batsman during the sixth.

Whitehurst gave up six hits and four runs--one earned--struck out four and walked one. He was activated from the disabled list on Tuesday and lost his season debut that night in Cincinnati.

Cincinnati 14, Colorado 2--John Roper pitched six innings and singled home a run in his major league debut at Cincinnati as the Reds cruised to their seventh consecutive victory.

The Rockies have lost six in a row, and their pitchers have given up 124 runs in the last 13 games.

David Nied (3-5), Bryn Smith and Bruce Ruffin gave up 12 runs on eight hits and eight walks in the first three innings.

Roper (1-0) was called up to make one start in place of Tim Belcher, who was hit on his right forearm by a line drive last week.

Pittsburgh 5, Chicago 3--Bob Walk improved his record against the Cubs to 14-3 as the Pirates rallied with four runs during the seventh inning at Chicago.

Walk (4-3) has won five consecutive games against Chicago since April 13, 1990.

Greg Hibbard (3-3) gave up four runs and five hits in six-plus innings. Jose Vizcaino of the Cubs was hitless in four at-bats, ending his 16-game hitting streak, the longest in the majors this season.

St. Louis 1, Florida 0--Pinch-hitter Todd Zeile singled with the bases loaded during the ninth inning at St. Louis as the Cardinals ended a string of 17 consecutive scoreless innings.

St. Louis was shut out Saturday night on Ryan Bowen’s six-hitter and got only three hits in eight innings against Marlin starter Luis Aquino. The Cardinals scored against rookie reliever Trevor Hoffman (0-1).

With one out, Gregg Jefferies singled, stole second and went to third on catcher Steve Decker’s wild throw. Ray Lankford and Mark Whiten were intentionally walked to load the bases. Zeile, batting for Stan Royer, singled to center through a drawn-in infield.

Lee Smith (1-1) made only his second appearance this month and pitched a perfect ninth.

Cardinal starter Donovan Osborne gave up five hits in eight innings.

Philadelphia 5, Atlanta 4--Mickey Morandini singled home the go-ahead run during the eighth inning, lifting the Phillies at Atlanta and ending the Braves’ four-game winning streak.

Mariano Duncan singled against Greg McMichael (1-2) for his third hit of the game, and two outs later, pinch-hitter Juan Bell sacrificed, Lenny Dykstra popped out and Morandini singled to right for the go-ahead run.

Danny Jackson (4-1) gave up four runs and six hits in seven innings, walked four and struck out two. He was 0-4 against the Braves last season.

Mitch Williams pitched the ninth for his 14th save.

Atlanta starter John Smoltz gave up four runs and seven hits in six innings.
