NATIONAL LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Incaviglia Has Grand Game for Phillies, 9-3

Pete Incaviglia hit a first-inning grand slam and drove in five runs Thursday night to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 9-3 victory over the Montreal Expos at Philadelphia.

Incaviglia’s grand slam, the fifth of his career, came off Chris Nabholz (3-4), who left after 1 1/3 innings. Nabholz walked two and hit a batter before giving up Incaviglia’s fifth home run this season.

Curt Schilling (5-1) gave up seven hits as he pitched his third complete game and the Phillies’ major league-leading eighth. Schilling struck out five, walked two and retired the final 15 Expos in order.

The Phillies, who have won four of their last five games, increased their lead in the National League East to 6 1/2 games over the second-place Expos.

San Francisco 6, Cincinnati 1--Kirt Manwaring matched a career best with three hits and had two runs batted in at San Francisco as the Giants increased their winning streak to six games.

Trevor Wilson (2-3) limited the Reds to two hits through five innings but was replaced after giving up a leadoff double to Barry Larkin in the sixth. Wilson walked four and struck out four.

Tom Browning (3-3) gave up a season-high 11 hits, walked three and struck out two in 5 1/3 innings as the Reds lost their fourth consecutive game after winning seven in a row.

San Diego 5, Colorado 4--Fred McGriff hit a two-run home run in the 11th inning, lifting the Padres at San Diego after the Rockies had gone ahead in the top of the inning.

Gary Sheffield opened the bottom of the 11th with a single against Darren Holmes (0-3) and McGriff followed with his eighth homer to give the Padres their third victory in the four-game series.

The Rockies took a 4-3 lead in the 11th when Dante Bichette hit a two-out home run against Gene Harris (3-0), but still lost for the 14th time in 16 games.

St. Louis 6, Chicago 3--Bob Tewksbury won his fourth consecutive decision and Geronimo Pena, batting .149 left-handed, had a three-run double for the Cardinals at St. Louis.

Tewksbury (4-3) struck out three and walked none in seven innings. He has walked only two batters in 55 1/3 innings this season. Lee Smith earned his 12th save.

Pena, batting .421 right-handed, entered the game with only two RBIs and 20 strikeouts in 74 at-bats from the left side. He doubled inside the first-base bag against Jose Guzman (4-4) to cap the Cardinals’ four-run third inning.
