IN REVIEW / NICOLE MILLER : A Store to Suit All Your Personalities

Share

The Store: Nicole Miller for men and women, with clothes and accessories designed by Miller, based in New York.

The Setup: This has to be the most schizophrenic store to come along in some time. There are dresses printed with scenes of dinosaurs locked in combat, men’s ties with “before” and “after” sketches of plastic-surgery procedures, homages to Elvis on ruffled silk blouses, and vests printed with herds of sheep. For people who don’t like wacky conversational pieces, the other side of the store offers the exact opposite. Expect to see pared-down, solid-colored separates and useful little black dresses that couldn’t be more basic if they tried.

The Mood: Everything is displayed like art in an airy space. The owners could run a bowling lane down each side of the store and still have extra room. Terra cotta floor tiles and creative branch-and-leaf-motif clothes racks are appealing.

Overheard: “Gary, look what I found.” A woman repeated this into the air until Gary, we assume, finally joined her from the other side of the store. She pointed out a women’s black tuxedo, the most beautiful item in the place, tried it on but didn’t buy it.

The Salesclerks: Informed, not pushy. Unfortunately, they look better in the clothes than most of us will.

Opinion: This store is for anyone who has a moderate-to-better physique and a moderate-to-better bank account.

The Prices: Dresses seem well priced at $200 to $300. The tux jacket is a bit high at $405. Novelty silk ties come in at a stiff $60. Other items are worth it if they’re a must-have on your shopping list. The Madonna-esque white milkmaid blouse is spectacular, but $255?

The Mistakes: No mirrors in the dressing rooms.

Location: Smack dab in the middle of Euro-friendly Sunset Plaza. 8633 Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood. (310) 652-1629. Open 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. Closed Sunday.
