San Gabriel : Historic Building Protection

Share

The City Council has approved a temporary measure to protect historic buildings until a more detailed law is adopted.

If a structure more than 75 years old is damaged or demolished without city permission, the Planning Commission may require a “museum-quality” restoration under the interim measure. The commission must find that the building had historic value.

To enforce the law, City Atty. Robert L. Kress said, the city could refuse to allow any “replacement development.”

The measure, like an earlier law it supersedes, requires that demolition permits for buildings more than 50 years old be reviewed by the Planning Commission.
