Countdown to Election Day 13 Days Left in the L.A. Mayoral Campaign : THE DAY IN REVIEW

Share

How the mayoral candidates spent their day: A shoving match erupted outside Richard Riordan’s downtown law office between his supporters and black lawyers protesting his firm’s hiring record. Michael Woo said his campaign did not paste swastikas on Riordan’s campaign signs, and claimed Riordan made up the accusation to divert attention from the fact that a Riordan volunteer heckled President Clinton during his Los Angeles visit. (Riordan workers said the heckler acted alone.)

Riordan appeared as guest of honor at a gay fund-raiser. Woo, meanwhile, suffered a setback when a Sacramento judge temporarily blocked the state Democratic Party from campaigning independently on his behalf. Endorsements: Sheriff Sherman Block for Riordan and the Rev. Cecil Murray of First A.M.E. Church for Woo.

AIRWAVES / MAILBOX How the campaign was waged in the realm of advertising: Riordan is inundating homes with a new mailer and TV ad focusing on the 1,200 rapes that have occurred in Hollywood during opponent Michael Woo’s eight years on the City Council. “Mike Woo: A Record on Crime That Could Kill You,” reads the mailer. The TV commercial features a woman walking nervously down the street as the narrator says, “Twelve hundred women raped in Hollywood since 1985.”
