Mirroring a statewide trend, high school dropout rates are on the decline in the San Fernando, Santa Clarita and Antelope valleys, according to a new state Department of Education report. Across California, the 1992 dropout rate was 16.6%, compared to 18.2% the year before.

With the exception of the Glendale district, which experienced only a slight increase in an already low dropout rate, percentages in all other Valley-area districts fell or stayed the same from 1991 to 1992. About half of the Valley schools in the Los Angeles System have seen their rates go up, but a few, including San Fernando High School, experienced significant decreases since 1991.

The Antelope valley Union School District saw the biggest decrease, going from 23.4% in 1991 to 11.1% in 1992, the last year statistics are available. One school in that district, Antelope Valley High School, saw its rate fall from 26.8% to 8.2%. One of the more notablechanges in recent years was in the Burbank Unified School District, where Burroughs High School’s rate plunged between 1990 and last year from 18.1% to 2.9%.
