A conservative archrival of the late B.T. Collins has won the Republican nomination to succeed the flamboyant Vietnam veteran in the state Assembly.

Fair Oaks businesswoman Barbara Alby, who lost two races to Collins in the last 19 months, topped a field of 17 candidates Tuesday with 23% of the vote and will face Democrat Joan Barry in a July 27 runoff in the district, which traditionally votes Republican.

Alby, backed by pro-gun, anti-abortion and traditional-values activists, defeated nine other Republicans in the 5th Assembly District in the Sacramento County suburbs east and north of the state Capitol.

Barry, executive director of a group that provides meals to senior citizens, won the Democratic nomination with less than half of vote received by Alby, finishing fifth overall.

On final, unofficial returns, Alby had 9,365 votes. Barry received 4,318 votes.

Libertarian David Walker and independent Ronald Currey, both unopposed, also advanced to the July 27 runoff, although both fell short of 500 votes.

The district includes the Sacramento suburbs of Carmichael, Citrus Heights, Fair Oaks, Folsom and Orangevale.

The 5th Assembly seat is the only vacancy in the 80-seat Assembly.
