Countdown to Election Day : 11 Days Left in the L.A. Mayoral Campaign

Share

THE DAY IN REVIEW How the mayoral candidates spent their day: The Los Angeles police union said it will stand by Richard Riordan despite his disclosure this week that he was arrested twice--for drunk driving and interfering with an officer--about 25 years ago.

Meanwhile, new public records showed Riordan is overwhelming rival Michael Woo in campaign spending, largely due to a $3-million infusion from his personal fortune. In the first month of the runoff, Riordan outspent Woo nearly 3 to 1, with most of the money going to TV ads and high-quality mailers.

Endorsements: U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Henry G. Cisneros for Woo; former Los Angeles City Councilwoman Peggy Stevenson for Riordan.

AIRWAVES / MAILBOX How the campaign was waged in the realm of advertising: A slate mailer featuring President Clinton’s endorsement of Michael Woo was sent to Democratic voters. Woo sent out a mailer displaying the picture of televangelist Pat Robertson and seeking to portray Richard Riordan as a tool of the religious right. Woo also began running two new TV ads, one seeking to portray Riordan as an opponent of abortion rights and another highlighting Woo’s support of abortion rights and gun control and his endorsement from Clinton.

COMING UP Some of the key events on the candidates’ schedules today: * Riordan has no scheduled public appearances.

* Woo will hold a 10:15 a.m. news conference with the National Organization for Women at the Women’s Medical Group of Tarzana.
