As usual, All-American Marion Jones of Thousand Oaks High figures to be the best--and the busiest--athlete at tonight’s Masters Meet at Cerritos College.

The senior is expected to easily win the 100- and 200-meter sprints and the long jump, events she leads the nation in this season. She also will anchor the 1,600-meter relay team, which is not expected to qualify for next week’s State meet.

Field events begin at 6:30 p.m. and running events at 7. The top five finishers qualify for the State meet June 4-5 at Cerritos College.

Jones, who has won three consecutive State titles in the 100 and 200, won the sprints and long jump at last week’s Southern Section Division I championship.

This is the first year that Jones has competed in the long jump, and already she has the third best high school jump of all time at 21 feet 7 inches. She’s aiming to beat the record of 22-3, set by North Carolinian Kathy McMillan in 1976.

If Jones had decided to run the open 400 instead of the 1,600 relay, Thousand Oaks could have been in a position to win the team title at the State meet. But her coach, Art Green, said that triple would be too difficult. So Long Beach Poly is expected to battle Oakland Skyline for the team title.

Poly will need solid performances from its sprinters, led by sophomores Aminah Haddad and Andrea Anderson. Haddad finished second in the 200 and third in the 100 last week in the Southern Section Division I meet; Anderson had a second in the 100 and third in the 200. Poly won the 400 and 1,600 relays.

In the boys’ field, Edward Turner of Inglewood Morningside could win three individual events. He has the second-fastest qualifying times in the 100 and 200 and has the state’s best long jump of the season at 24-1 3/4.
