NATIONAL LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Bonds Enjoys Reversal of Fortune Against Braves

Barry Bonds said his three-run, winning home run Sunday does not make up for his past failure against the Atlanta Braves.

“You get spanked by a person often enough, eventually you’re going to have your time, too,” Bonds said after lifting the San Francisco Giants to a 4-3 victory at Atlanta.

Bonds had 10 hits in 50 at-bats with one homer and two runs batted in for Pittsburgh during the 1991 and ’92 playoffs against the Braves.

In seven games against the Braves this year, Bonds is batting .481 with three homers and 12 RBIs.

Tom Glavine (7-1), trying to become the first pitcher in Atlanta history to open a season 8-0, gave up seven hits in eight innings, and saw his string of shutout innings end at 20 when Robby Thompson hit his fourth homer during the fifth. Thompson had singled in the third to extend his hitting streak to 20 games, longest in the majors this season.

Thompson started the seventh by reaching on third baseman Terry Pendleton’s error. Will Clark followed with a single, and after Matt Williams’ fly out advanced Thompson to third, Bonds hit his 14th homer.

Reliever Dave Burba (5-2) was the winner and Rod Beck worked the final inning for his 13th save.

Philadelphia 18, Colorado 1--The Phillies hit six home runs to complete a three-game sweep at Denver.

The Phillies, who at 34-14 own the best record in the majors, handed the Rockies their 21st loss in 25 games. Colorado dropped to 14-36, and has lost 12 of its last 13 at Mile High Stadium.

Phillie pitcher Tommy Greene (7-0) gave up six hits and became the first Phillie starter to win his first seven decisions since Steve Carlton went 8-0 in 1981. Greene also hit a two-run homer.

Darren Daulton hit two homers, and Mariano Duncan, Dave Hollins and Kim Batiste also homered.

Cincinnati 8, New York 4--Joe Oliver hit a tiebreaking three-run homer for the Reds during the seventh inning at New York.

Barry Larkin hit a two-run homer and two singles for the Reds, who had 14 hits to help Manager Davey Johnson win two of three games against his former team.

Bobby Bonilla hit two homers for the Mets.

Bobby Ayala (1-2) pitched three innings in relief of starter Tom Browning for the victory. Rob Dibble, making his first appearance since coming off the disabled list, pitched the ninth.

St. Louis 10, San Diego 4--Ozzie Smith had four hits, drove in four runs and hit his first homer since Sept. 23, 1991, as the Cardinals rallied from a three-run deficit for the victory at St. Louis.

Smith singled during the first, drove in two runs with a bloop double during the second, singled and stole a base during the fourth, and hit his 23rd career homer during the sixth against Pat Gomez.

Phil Plantier homered twice for the Padres.

Rene Arocha (4-0) gave up seven hits in seven innings.

Chicago 5, Montreal 2--Dwight Smith and Rick Wilkins hit home runs for the Cubs in a rain-delayed game at Chicago.

Houston 2, Miami 1--Pete Harnisch (5-2) and three relievers combined for a five-hitter at Miami to lead the Astros.

Luis Gonzalez hit his seventh homer for the Astros.
