SIMI VALLEY : Council to Discuss Balancing Budget

Share

The Simi Valley City Council will hold an open meeting today to begin fine-tuning the city’s 1993-94 budget, beginning with proposed Police Department spending.

The meeting is slated to run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the council chambers at City Hall, 2929 Tapo Canyon Road.

Last month, Simi Valley staff members released a preliminary general fund budget calling for $25.2 million in spending during the fiscal year that begins July 1. However, the city’s income during this period is expected to fall about $342,500 short of that figure.

Simi Valley officials have said the budget can probably be brought into balance without layoffs or reductions in city services.

During public meetings in the coming weeks, the council will take a close look at each city department’s spending proposals to determine whether the requests are justified.

Some of the proposed police spending would involve the use of assets seized during narcotics investigations.

Proposed purchases include nine patrol cars, two motorcycles, a parking enforcement vehicle and one police dog.
