Canadian TV Network to Beam Into U.S. Homes: The Canadian Broadcasting Corp., Canada’s state-run television network, and a private affiliate, Power Broadcasting Inc. of Montreal, have reached an agreement with California-based DirecTV, a unit of GM Hughes Electronics Corp., to beam news, sports and entertainment into living rooms in the United States. DirecTV is scheduled to launch North America’s first direct-broadcast satellite in December and begin offering 150 channels of entertainment, information, sports, pay-per-view movies and specialty programming to homes equipped with 18-inch satellite dishes, Canadian broadcast executives said. DirecTV, which is expected to be the first of several U.S. satellite broadcasters, said it plans to attract 10 million cable subscribers in the United States and 1 million subscribers in Canada within 10 years.
