The Angels are expected to make Brian Anderson, a left-handed pitcher from Wright State, their first pick in today’s free agent draft. Even if they don’t, the Angels, who have the third pick overall, are almost certain to select a pitcher. The club’s minor league system is thin on pitching, particularly since Pete Janicki, last year’s No. 1 pick, will miss the rest of the season because of a fractured elbow.

Left fielder Luis Polonia missed Wednesday’s game because of a bruised hand, suffered when he was hit by shortstop Domingo Cedeno’s throw on a double-play relay Tuesday. Polonia’s hand was swollen, but he was able to take batting practice. Stan Javier started in his place. . . . First baseman J.T. Snow is batting .115 since his average peaked at .407 on April 24. He went into Wednesday’s game mired in a seven-for-53 slump. . . . Going into the game, the Angels had given up 48 home runs and were on pace to break last season’s total of 130. . . .
