John Arthur has been named editor of The Times’ expanded Valley edition.

In two other appointments announced Thursday, Ardith Hilliard was appointed the edition’s managing editor and Jon D. Markman was named executive news editor. The appointments were announced by Carol Stogsdill, Senior Editor.

The Times recently expanded its staff and coverage in a redesigned Valley edition, which is circulated in the San Fernando, Antelope and Santa Clarita valleys and in Glendale. Arthur succeeds Robert Rawitch, who last month was named Editorial Operations Director for The Times’ Valley and Ventura editions.

Arthur will oversee the staff of Times editors, reporters, photographers and artists based in Chatsworth.

“These moves and the recent expansion of the Valley edition reflect The Times’ strong commitment to providing complete coverage of this community without sacrificing the quality metropolitan, national and foreign report that Times readers have long enjoyed,” Stogsdill said.

Arthur, 46, recently was an assistant editor on The Times’ National desk. Previously, he worked at The Times’ Orange County edition, where he was city editor and then managing editor/news at a time when the edition underwent major expansion. Arthur came to The Times in 1986 from the San Francisco Examiner. Previously he was a reporter and editor at the Pittsburg (Calif.) Post-Dispatch.
