Clinton Administration’s Travelgate

Share

Wow! What power! Harry Thomason didn’t like the answers his partner received from the White House travel department so he had seven career government workers fired (May 25). I’m impressed.

As a registered Democrat who backed Bill Clinton all the way, I thought the Republicans had a lock on the self-absorbed--”who do you think you are talking to”--”let them eat cake” mentality.

Was I wrong!

* Why should the White House be providing transportation for the press in the first place (even if they do pay for it)? Could the media not form a press pool and make their own arrangements?

How about a little more separation of press and state?

* I found this correlation between your editorials (May 25) on the misuse of firearms and the Clinton Administration’s handling of the White House travel office affair: Tighter gun control might keep Bill Clinton from shooting himself in the foot so often.

* The difference between Bill Clinton and Ronald Reagan is $175. We at Drucker/Gornik’s Barber Shop in Beverly Hills have been cutting President Reagan’s hair for many years now and still do! He is in the shop every 14 days and is charged $25 for a haircut and shoeshine.

* I seem to recall that Mrs. Clinton receives zero salary for heading up the Task Force on Health Care Reform. Could we possibly write off President Clinton’s haircut against that and move on to responsible journalism?

Let the National Inquirer handle such “issues.”

* First it was Zoe Baird and gays in the military. Then came the Waco disaster and the stimulus package fiasco. Now, it’s Travelgate and the LAX haircut. My God, what’s next? Whoever coined the moniker “Slick Willie” ought to apologize for misdirecting Americans from knowing the true man in the Oval Office, Blunder Bill.

* As a staunch George Bush supporter, I never thought the day would come when I actually looked forward to reading about the current Administration. Haircuts on the runway of LAX; dismissal of an entire department that was replaced by a cousin and a Little Rock travel agency. What next for the White House, or could this really be “Green Acres”?

* As far as I can tell, President Clinton’s mistake has been to overestimate the intelligence and attention span of the American public, and the professionalism of the American press. Shame on him? No, shame on us.
