Lippman’s ‘Action News’ an Example of Degradation
Hooray for Joseph Benti’s Counterpunch, “Lippman’s Got It Wrong--as Do the ‘Elite’ ” (May 24). I too was astounded by John Lippman’s positive assessment of “Action News” as a contribution to Los Angeles.
The sad state of Los Angeles depresses me, not only because of the relentless erosion of the quality of life but because of its celebration by the news media. Each day I feel mugged twice, first by the civic deterioration and violence, then again by the reportage of it.
Local news today does not illuminate; it glorifies and heralds. Local media present news like P. T. Barnum presented his freak shows: with barkers, clowns and promises to thrill and excite--after the next commercial.
“Action News” is not alone in this degradation of news and information, but it is the prime example.
