Azusa police shot and killed a man who threatened four officers with a knife and then tried to run three of them over after commandeering a squad car early Sunday, authorities said.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Bill Martin said the incident occurred about 2 a.m. after residents complained that a man with a knife was knocking on doors at an apartment building in the 600 block of East 8th Street.

Martin said the officers used pepper spray to try to subdue the man, but he jumped into the patrol car. When the man tried to run them over, the officers opened fire.
