GLENDALE : Program to Pay for Recycled Motor Oil

Share

Glendale residents can get cash for recycling used motor oil through the city Fire Department’s hazardous materials division, officials announced Monday.

Starting Thursday, fire officials will pay 16 cents a gallon, or 4 cents a quart, for the liquid as part of the Curbside Collection Program, said Vasken Demirjian, supervisor of the hazardous materials division.

The state-funded program made its debut in Glendale on April 22. But cash incentives were not offered before because fire officials had to receive approval from the California Integrated Waste Management Board.

Under the program, residents wishing to dispose of their used oil should contact fire officials, who in turn will go to the homes and collect the product on Thursdays, Demirjian said.

The state board first made the rebate plan available for various agencies on April 1. Money for recyclers comes from state fees that oil manufacturers have to pay, said Pat Macht, the waste management board’s public affairs director.

“In California, used motor oil is considered a hazardous waste,” Macht said. “This was a way to try to prevent the illegal disposal of used motor oil.”

As of this week, the Glendale program has taken in nearly 900 gallons from nearly 100 households, Demirjian said. With the new rebate feature, “we hope that it would pick up,” he said.
