Corey Taking Long Route to Meet Longtime Neighbor

Bryan Corey grew up in Thousand Oaks a few blocks from the home of Sparky Anderson, but he has never met the longtime manager of the Detroit Tigers. After signing with the Tigers and reporting today to the team’s facility in Lakeland, Fla., Corey hopes to get his chance sometime soon.

Corey, a shortstop from Pierce College and Thousand Oaks High, was a 12th-round selection in last week’s amateur draft.

Baseball

Former area high school standouts Ryan McGuire of UCLA and Mark Loretta of Northwestern are first-team selections on the American Baseball Coaches Assn. All-American team.

McGuire, a junior first baseman and an El Camino Real High product, was drafted in the third round last week by the Boston Red Sox.

Loretta, a senior shortstop from St. Francis, was a seventh-round pick of the Milwaukee Brewers.

Dan Chergey, a right-handed pitcher from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Thousand Oaks High, signed with the Florida Marlins. Chergey, drafted in the 22nd round last week, was 11-2 this season.

Also drafted were Buena High third baseman Gary Paul (50th round, San Diego Padres); Notre Dame High catcher Dave Supple (50th round, Angels); Kennedy High outfielder Rick Nadeau (45th round, Angels) and San Fernando High right-hander John Romero (56th round, Seattle Mariners).

Cal State Northridge right fielder Greg Shepard and UCLA first baseman Ryan McGuire of El Camino Real High were named to the NCAA All-District VIII first team.

Basketball

Amy Horst, a 6-foot center for Valley College, signed a letter of intent with Cal State Northridge.
