Santa Ana Schools Plan Independent Studies for Adults
The Santa Ana Unified School District is now developing a limited adult education program that would enable people 18 and older to take independent study classes to complete their high school education.
The Board of Education last week approved the program, which is to be in place by September. Classes could include English as a second language and mathematics.
Joe Tafoya, assistant superintendent for secondary division, said the program will be designed to complement Rancho Santiago College’s adult education. The college district is now turning away some students for lack of space.
The district would pay the $30,000 cost of the program but would be reimbursed by the state. If successful, the program could be doubled in size for the 1994-95 school year.
District Controller Bob Giritz said that because the program is new, it remains unclear how many students would be accommodated, although the level of funding suggests it could be a few dozen or less.
