Nine inmates were injured in a racial brawl at the Peter J. Pitchess Honor Rancho in Castaic, authorities said Sunday.

The fight began about 8 p.m. Saturday with an argument between a black and a Latino inmate in the south compound of the jail’s minimum-security ranch facility, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Deputy Diane Hecht said.

As the two inmates continued to argue, about 20 others joined in, dividing along racial lines in a melee quelled by two dozen deputies, Hecht said.

Five inmates were treated for cuts at the jail clinic, and three others were taken to County-USC Medical Center for treatment, Hecht said. Willie Buckly, 22, who was serving a 90-day sentence for forgery, was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital for treatment for a concussion.

Nearly 50 inmates were transferred to other facilities to prevent further outbreaks of violence, Hecht said.
