DANA POINT : Baby Stabbed With Fork; Mother Held

A Dana Point woman whose 5-month-old son was discovered with a fork plunged into his back was arrested Monday.

Matthew Charles Shedarwick was taken to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo for surgery, sheriff’s deputies said. His condition was not available Monday evening.

Deputies arrested Donna Rae Bednar, 31, at her home in the 34500 block of Calle Rosita about 8 a.m. Bednar had called the Sheriff’s Department on the emergency 911 line asking for Luke Skywalker, a character in a science fiction movie, said Lt. Dick Olson. She also stated that her husband was having a heart attack.

Deputies went to her home and found Bednar running around her front yard and screaming, Olson said.

When they entered the bedroom, deputies heard a faint cry and located the baby under two large pillows on a bed. A fork had been stuck into the baby’s back with such force that the handle was doubled over, Olson said.

Bednar was booked into County Jail in Santa Ana on suspicion of attempted murder and child abuse, Olson said. She was scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in Municipal Court in Laguna Niguel.
