VENICE : Trapping of Ducks Resumes Amid Outcry

Share

Amid cries of protests from activists, officials on Tuesday resumed catching and killing the tame Venice ducks they believe harbor a deadly virus.

Workers from the state Department of Fish and Game used boats and special net-launching guns to round up at least 86 ducks, most along the stretch of million-dollar homes that front Grand Canal near Marina del Rey. All the ducks were to be killed by injection.

The kill was suspended over the weekend in part, officials said, because of telephoned threats to the department and the unflagging presence of protesters at the nearby Venice Canals. The two sides failed to agree Monday on an alternative to the eradication plan.

Animal-rights activists and some canal residents have sought to quarantine the ducks for testing.
