County Helps Fund Nature Center Rides

Los Angeles County supervisors on Tuesday contributed nearly $20,000 to help continue a program that buses students to nature centers in the Santa Monica and Santa Susana mountains.

The 5-year-old program provides free transportation for students to areas in the hills around the San Fernando Valley, coordinator Rob Remedi said. He coordinates about 400 trips a year.

Funding for the bus program comes from the Proposition A half-cent sales tax approved by voters to finance transportation improvements.

The county’s share of the Proposition A money contributed Tuesday will be used to bus students in unincorporated communities. The city of Los Angeles also contributes about $70,000 a year to the program to bus children in its communities, Remedi said.
