East Valley Focus : NORTH HOLLYWOOD : Wilson’s Wife Takes a Look at School Program

To her teacher, the most important thing about 6-year-old Rebecca Romo on Tuesday was not that she was playing ball with the Gayle Wilson, wife of the governor of California.

It was that she was playing ball at all.

Rebecca is participating in a special program at Camellia Avenue Elementary School in North Hollywood designed to help young students build self-esteem and maintain their interest in education, and Wilson stopped by Tuesday to get a closer look at the program.

“She came to school crying,” said Christy Cairns, the teacher of the young pupil who had become known as a loner who declined to mix with her fellow students. “She no more wanted to have anything to do with this school than fly to the moon.”

Developing healthy relationships is what the program is all about. Called the Four A Foundation Program, it is designed to provide acceptance, affection, attention and approval to kids who might otherwise turn away from school to antisocial activity, Cairns said.

The program is the only one of its kind in Southern California operated by the private foundation. Ninety-three students are enrolled.

The impact is evident in improved attendance, academic performance and attitude toward school, said Cairns, whose explanation impressed Wilson.

“I think it makes sense,” Wilson said. “Making sure they are well-integrated into the school is going to make a difference in their life.”
