VAN NUYS : Man Convicted in Slaying at Bar

After less than one day of deliberations, a Van Nuys Superior Court jury convicted an unemployed mechanic of voluntary manslaughter for shooting a pool player in a Van Nuys beer bar.

Joe Andrew Lozano, 31, faces up to 11 years in state prison for fatally shooting Ronald Wayne Clark, 26, in the Rack ‘N’ Tap bar on Van Nuys Boulevard on April 7, 1992.

Lozano also faces up to four years in prison for wounding Gregory Garner, 29, in a shooting that brought an assault with a deadly weapon conviction.

Lozano testified during his trial that he shot the two men after drinking for 21 hours to celebrate his 30th birthday. He said he became afraid when Clark made racial comments and said he was affiliated with a white supremacy group.

Superior Court Judge Kathryne Ann Stoltz scheduled sentencing for July 14.
