Alhambra : Superfund Cap Supported

Seventy-five California cities, including four from the San Gabriel Valley, are enlisting the public’s help to win federal limits on municipal contributions to clean up Superfund sites.

The Environmental Protection Agency is considering limiting the amount of money corporations can seek from cities in lawsuits to 4% of the total bill for cleaning up Superfund sites. Corporations have claimed that municipal garbage is also to blame for the pollution.

For example, 64 corporations held liable for the Operating Industries Landfill cleanup in Monterey Park have sued 29 cities that sent household garbage there.

Alhambra, Monterey Park, Rosemead and San Gabriel belong to the coalition and face lawsuits over the Operating Industries landfill cleanup. Officials from Alhambra say the EPA cap would save the city $8 million.

At a news conference Monday, Alhambra Councilman Boyd Condie called on the public to write and telephone the Clinton Administration. He said cities cannot afford to pay millions of dollars to clean up sites that were polluted primarily by businesses.
