JUST HOT AIR? At shareholders’ meetings, you talk about how your company’s stock is doing, right? Not always. . . . At the Carl Karcher Enterprises annual shareholders meeting (D6) in Anaheim on Wednesday, one complaint was that Carl’s Jr. restaurants’ napkins are too thin. . . . Another disgruntled shareholder prefers paper towels to the hot air dryers in its bathrooms--he says the water blows up your sleeves. And what does founder and Chairman Carl N. Karcher say? He prefers paper towels, hands down, but too many people clog the toilets with them.

RUSSIAN ROULETTE? Boris Yeltsin has no immediate plans to visit California, but if he ever does, he’ll be prepared. Four representatives of his office visited the UC Irvine campus Sunday on a scouting trip for a “future” visit by the Russian president. . . . Social ecology professor John Whiteley, who has done research in Russia, says he only had time to show them an acre of campus: “We have 1,500 more acres. If they want to see them, they’ll have to come back.”

CENTURY OF ART: In the ‘20s, she was known as the “Mama of the Dada” art movement. It was much later that actress/painter Beatrice Wood became world renowned for her ceramics. The Ojai artist, now 100 but still hard at work, will appear at the Severin Wunderman Museum in Irvine on Sunday to open an exhibit of her works. . . . The titles on some of her ceramics and tiles to be displayed help explain why she has fascinated art lovers: “He’s Lying Again,” “Her Mistake,” “Betrayed.”

VIAS PARA BICICLETAS: Local bike riders are aided by a county map in tracking the vast network of bicycle trails. Problem has been, many bicycle riders could not easily read them: They were all in English. . . . The county has now tried to help many riders, with new Spanish-language trail maps, which include information on bicycle laws, commuter and safety tips. The free maps are available at any county regional park.
