Consumer Mood Index Inches Up: The University of Michigan’s preliminary index of consumer sentiment for June was 82.8, up from 80.3 in May. Analysts said the measure indicates that the economy will expand at a rate of 2% to 3% in the months ahead. The reading remains subdued because “employment conditions are still mediocre and a lot of people are still nervous about taxes,” said Marilyn Schaja, economist at Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette.
