Don’t Be So Quick to Judge Disneyland

Several people expressed their unhappiness (Letters, June 13) with the increase in admission prices at Disneyland, and I, too, am unhappy about the increase.

However, before judging Disneyland, there should be some investigation into Disneyland’s overhead. A cast member has told me that the admission price does not cover the overhead: ride operators, entertainers, sweepers, utilities, maintenance, security, taxes, new development, etc.

I am not privy to Disneyland’s books, and I do not know whether this is a correct statement or not. What I do know is that the rides are technologically more sophisticated and the entertainment more lavish than they were when the park opened in 1955. For example, the first “parade” which I ever saw was the band, Mickey and a few characters going down Main street and back up again.

Although I do not like the price increase from the standpoint of someone who has to pay admission, I would like to have more information before actually condemning Disneyland for charging so much.
