Los Angeles has had a hockey team for 26 years. I would hardly call hockey’s popularity sudden or consider it any more violent than football or boxing, both popular sports.

In the early 1980s, when Butch Goring played a one-man game, Danny Malone checked every opposition player in sight and Rogie Vachon’s shutout record rivaled Hrudey’s. The Forum had many sold-out seasons.

The purchase of Wayne Gretzky in 1988 has brought a celebrity status to hockey, and after being so close, so many times, this L. A. team and its faithful fans deserve to bring the Stanley Cup home.
