Southland home builders and architects have yet again dominated the design competition at the Pacific Coast Builders Conference, the annual gathering of developers and allied professionals from 14 western states.

Southern California builders, designers and projects won 22 of the 39 “Gold Nugget” categories, two of three “home of the year” awards and best commercial project honors in this year’s contest, which drew nearly 500 entries.

The highlight of the conference, “Gold Nugget” competition in the last decade has seen most of the prizes go to Southland builders and architects. The 35th annual convention, one of the largest building industry meetings in the United States, ended Saturday at the Mosconi Convention Center.

The Southland’s “home of the year” winners were:

--Kaufman & Broad Home Corp.’s California Skyline Plan 3 model in Perris, in Riverside County. The 1,412-square-foot home on a 4,000-square-foot lot priced at $108,990 won in the detached, small-lot category. The judges cited the model’s layout as efficient and elegant, adding that from the front it “looks like a house twice as big.”

--La Mirage Development’s La Mirage condominium project, Plan 3, in Aliso Viejo, in Orange County won in the attached home category. The winning model is 1,538 square feet in size, priced at $175,900 and was praised by the judges for its old-world architectural style, which uses authentic, natural products.

The award for the “best of show” commercial project went to the Sony Music Campus in Santa Monica designed by Steven Erlich FAIA and built by Lowe Development. The three-building complex, workday home to 200 employees of Sony’s West Coast headquarters, features an interior court, an arboretum and a waterscape, and indoor and outdoor eating area.

The top honors for affordable housing also went, as they did in 1992, to Southland builders:

Kaufman & Broad won best affordable detached home for its California Encore development in Temecula, in southern Riverside County. Homes in the 130-unit project range in size from 1,001 to 1,364 square feet and start at $109,900.

The San Juan Group won best affordable attached honors with its Corte Melina plan in Rancho Santa Margarita in southern Orange County. Home sizes in the 192-unit development ranges from 711 to 1,300 square feet; prices range from $105,000 to $140,000.
