A nine-week course starting Thursday on popular country line dances, such as the “Boot Scoot Boogie,” kicks off the summer session of Mission College’s community extension program.

The college is offering 165 classes and seminars on art, computers, sports, careers and languages--from learning calligraphy to becoming a flight attendant to conversational Japanese.

“It’s just to keep the community occupied and give them some kind of dollar value for their education,” said Melody Kishimoto, assistant director of the community extension program.

Many of the classes, ranging in length from one day to several weeks, are held at Granada Hills High School. The fees for the non-credit courses range from $29 to $99.

While most classes are geared to adults, Kishimoto said the college also offers courses in reading, math and writing for children as young as 6 years of age. Teen-agers can take their pick from workshops on modeling, sculpture and sketching. Enrollment is taking place at the community extension program office in Veterans Memorial Park on Sayre Street, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.
