Glendale : Plan for Golf Course on Landfill Site OKd

Share

The Glendale City Council on Tuesday approved a master plan by American Golf Corp. of Santa Monica to build an 18-hole executive golf course on top of the Scholl Canyon Landfill.

The original nine-hole course was closed four years ago because of methane leaking from the landfill and constant shifting of the greens due to the decomposition of the material below. A new system has been installed to collect methane.

American Golf, the largest municipal golf course operator in the country, has agreed to spend $3.6 million to build a new course and driving range on about 56 acres of the 410-acre landfill, said Nello Iacono, director of parks, recreation and community services.

The city in April granted a 40-year lease to American Golf, which has agreed to pay the city at least $5.5 million in rent and concession fees over the life of the agreement.
