* Every second, 3.8 cans of SPAM are consumed (that’s 13,680 every hour). If you’re one of those who like SPAM and love to cook, we’ve got a contest that could win you even more SPAM ! On July 3, the Hawaiian Community Center Assn. holds its second annual SPAM cook-off/picnic at the Torrance Recreation Center. Co-sponsored by the George A. Hormel Co., the maker of the luncheon meat, the cook-off features chefs competing in two SPAM categories--appetizers and main dishes. Participants receive a variety of SPAM items ranging from aprons to “emergency” kits. To enter, contact Leonard Chow at (310) 327-5542. There is a $25 registration fee. Also at the cook-off: raffles, food, arts and crafts, and continuous Hawaiian music and entertainment. Hours: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. Each year, profits benefit a member of the community--this year’s recipient is cancer patient Daniel Murphy.
