Literary toilers in this community reach out to each other through groups like Pen Women, Simi Valley Poets, Ventura County Writers, Society of Children’s Book Writers and Gold Coast Fiction Writers. They sponsor seminars and workshops where authors, editors and agents share their expertise and experience in an attempt to help aspiring writers learn their craft and find their way through the publishing maze. To begin or continue publishing pursuits, consider attending Rosanne Falcone’s Scene and Sequel workshop from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at New America Savings Bank in Camarillo. Sponsored by Gold Coast Fiction Writers, the seminar will focus on story and character based on Dwight Swain’s book “Techniques of the Selling Writer.” Reservations are necessary. Poets Vision, conceived and directed by Richard Gotch Robinson, will present a reading of Shelley’s “Wild West Wind” as part of the Poetry Classics With Music series. Authors Carol Brightman and Kevin McCarthy of “Writing Dangerously,” the biography of Mary McCarthy, will reminisce about her career at 2 p.m. Monday on Michael Silverblatt’s Bookworm, KCRU, Oxnard, 89.9 FM.

The Ray D. Prueter Library and the Friends of the Library received an award of $5,000 for new children’s books. The money comes from a state sponsored program called “Grandparents and Books,” which encourages local senior citizens to read to, or be read to, by children in the community. Grandparent volunteers are asked to spend just two hours a week on a one-to-one basis with a child. Call Diane Lai at 486-5460 for details.
