Tennis Tournament Nets $270,000 for Cancer Center

USC/Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center will receive $270,000 raised at the May 15 Freeman Aces Cancer Tennis Tournament at the Beverly Hills Country Club. Freeman Cosmetic Corp., sponsor of the annual benefit, has raised more than $1 million for research. Hosts were the Larry and Judy Freeman family.

Friends of the Santa Monica Playhouse hosted a Tribute ’93 benefit on May 23 that netted $7,500. Guests saw “Dear Abby--The Confessions of an Overachiever.” The nonprofit theater offers a roster of services for young people.

Westside Food Bank attracted 300 guests and raised $33,000 at its June 6 benefit at the Miramar Sheraton in Santa Monica. The event honored Temple Emanuel of Beverly Hills and Bob Klein of St. John’s Hospital Foundation. Proceeds will be used to buy food for people in need.

The Wellness Community received $15,000, proceeds of the May 16 Sheila Ruth memorial art auction in Santa Monica. The benefit was hosted by Joanne King-Kramer and friends of Ruth, a Santa Monica artist who died in 1991. Wellness Community provides free psychosocial support for people with cancer and their families.

Pasadena Mental Health Center raised more than $52,000 at its 11th annual benefit May 21 at the home of Joe and Kathy Ryan. Proceeds will provide ongoing counseling and mental health programs in the San Gabriel Valley.

Muscular Dystrophy Assn. held its “Night Under the Stars” gala honoring Al Marasca, president of Ralphs Grocery Company, at the Century Plaza. The fund-raiser netted $198,000 for patient services, research, equipment for patients and summer camp for children.

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center received $465,000 from the Women’s Guild at its May 13 membership luncheon at the Regent Beverly Wilshire. The hospital’s hospice program, Women’s Guild Pavilion, AIDS and Immune Disorder Center and Pulmonary Molecular Biology Research Program will all benefit.
