Southwest’s ‘93-94 Season Opens Oct. 2

Eight different programs of music by 25 composers presented in three locations comprise the 1993-94 season of the Southwest Chamber Music Society.

Premiere performances of works by Anthony Payne, William Kraft, Elliott Carter and Frederick Lesemann top the repertory; in addition, revivals of modern classics by Chavez, Krenek, Nono, Powell, Ginastera and Revueltas, among others, will be presented, along with standard works by Shostakovich, Mozart, Prokofiev, Brahms and Prokofiev.

The Society’s seventh season opens Oct. 2 at Pasadena Presbyterian Church and Oct. 3 at the Orange County Performing Arts Center with a program including the premiere of Payne’s “The Song Streams in the Firmament.” It closes at Chapman University in Orange on June 17 and June 18 in Pasadena with a Halsey Stevens/Purcell/Brahms program.

In all, the Society’s musicians will give 16 subscription performances at Chapman University, Pasadena Presbyterian Church and the Orange County Performing Arts Center.

The group will also offer special events, among them a seven-concert “Breaking the Code of Contemporary Music” series at the Armory Center for the Arts, 145 N. Raymond Ave., Pasadena, on Sept. 26, Nov. 6, Jan. 16, Feb. 12, March 12, April 23 and June 11, and a Beethoven Birthday Marathon, Dec. 16, also at the Armory Center in Pasadena.
