SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The La Habra City School District board has banned smoking in all district facilities.

The ban will start Sept. 1.

The district received a $100,000 grant from the state last year for anti-tobacco and anti-drug programs on the condition that it become a “smoke-free environment” by 1995, officials said.

Now that the school board unanimously adopted the no-smoking rule, the district is eligible for another $100,000 grant to continue the anti-drug and anti-tobacco campaign during the coming school year.

“You can’t tell a youngster to stop if you have adult role models smoking in front of them,” district Supt. Richard A. Hermann said.

He said teachers and administrators should refrain from smoking at school as a way of discouraging students from smoking.

Smokers who want to quit will be encouraged to visit clinics that offer help.
