OJAI : Support for Highway Designation Sought

Share

Los Padres National Forest officials, who are seeking a federal Scenic Byway designation for a 38-mile stretch of California 33, will ask the Ventura County Board of Supervisors to endorse the idea at today’s board meeting.

The proposal focuses on a stretch of the winding forest highway between Wheeler Gorge and Lockwood Valley Road, north of Ojai.

Earl Clayton, a U.S. Forest Service spokesman, said that if the road is designated a National Forest Scenic Byway, it is more likely to receive money for improvements and maintenance. The program was set up to showcase roads running through scenic forest areas.

Clayton said his agency is obtaining endorsements from key officials, such as the supervisors, to bolster the California 33 nomination. The chief of the U.S. Forest Service in Washington, D.C., will make the final decision on the highway designation, he said.
