The New Jersey Devils, a team in search of a winning identity, tapped into the tradition of the Montreal Canadiens on Monday when they hired Hall of Famer Jacques Lemaire as their coach.

Lemaire, 47, signed a two-year contract.

He was a surprise choice to replace Herb Brooks, who resigned May 31 after one season behind the bench. Brooks was the fifth coach in the last six seasons for a team that has been plagued by poor attendance and playoff failure.

After a long career as a Canadien player and several other coaching jobs, Lemaire took over as Montreal’s coach for the final 17 games of the 1983-84 season and coached through the 1984-85 season before moving into the front office, where he has been serving in various capacities.
