Tribune to Buy 2 Publishing Companies: Chicago-based Tribune Co. said it plans to acquire the two companies for nearly $100 million in a move that will increase its involvement in multimedia technology. Tribune is paying $57 million in cash for Compton’s Multimedia Publishing Group, a unit of Encyclopaedia Britannica Inc., which develops interactive software. It is also buying Contemporary Books, a publisher of self-help and educational books, for $40 million in cash and stock.
