The Los Angeles Education Partnership has received a $25,000 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to connect a team of 60 teachers from 30 schools located near the Los Angeles River with university professors and industry scientists.
The teachers will participate in workshops and field study presentations, focusing on land and water use, human impact on ecosystems, water quality and pollution.
After the workshops, participants will conduct a field experiment on water quality, soil analysis, survey of wildlife or survey of microorganisms and discuss environmental issues with university and industry scientists and teachers from other participating schools through a telecommunications network, said John Wise, acting regional administrator of the EPA’s western region.
The EPA awarded a total of $170,000 in environmental education grants to 23 groups. Each organization will provide matching funds for grants that will cover one to two years. Final selections were made after a review of 218 applications by a panel of experts from business, education, government and environmental groups.
