LAGUNA NIGUEL : Seniors to Assist Sheriff’s Department
A team of senior citizen volunteers will be assisting the Sheriff’s Department in a variety of services.
The 23-member unit, called the Police Auxiliary Citizens Team, was sworn in at Tuesday’s City Council meeting by Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Davis, the city’s chief of police services.
As part of their duties, the team will check homes of vacationing residents, visit elderly and disabled people, register bicycles, monitor handicapped parking, assist with special events and provide administrative services.
Each team member completed 24 hours of training that included first aid, program policies and rules of conduct, and fingerprinting.
Other Southern California cities, including Dana Point, Mission Viejo and San Juan Capistrano, have initiated similar programs.
