Understandably, making a garment does take time and talent. Jan Salcido of Westminster, who teaches fashion design at Brooks College in Long Beach, says, “Students take two years of courses to understand the correct and professional way to make a pattern; however, by taking a standard pattern and making desired adjustments, a person can make a nice looking, individualized garment.”

Here’s a step-by-step procedure in altering the bodice of a standard pattern to change a fitted blouse into a roomy blouson.
