TEAM TENNIS : Dukes Defeat Minnesota in Overtime
After building a commanding lead over the Minnesota Penguins, the Dukes had to go to overtime to win their World TeamTennis match, 28-24, Friday at the Flagship Athletic Club in Minneapolis.
Newport Beach (2-0) led, 27-18, after regulation, but the Penguins (1-1) forced overtime when they won the final set, a 6-5 victory in men’s doubles by Johan Kriek and Paul Annacone over Trevor Kronemann and Rikard Bergh.
Kronemann and Bergh had led the set, 5-3, and had wasted two match points with Kronemann serving. Annacone and Kriek won a tiebreaker at 5-5 for the set and then won three consecutive overtime games, before Kronemann closed out the match on serve.
The Dukes got convincing victories in women’s doubles and mixed doubles. Katrina Adams and Manon Bollegraf beat Ginger Helgeson and Jessica Emmons, 6-3, and Bollegraf and Kronemann beat Emmons and Kriek, 6-2.
Bergh beat Annacone, 6-4, in men’s doubles and Helgeson beat Adams in women’s singles, 6-4.
The Dukes will play host to the Strings at 5 p.m. Sunday at John Wayne Tennis Club.
