A 16-year-old Oxnard boy was in extremely critical condition at St. John’s Regional Medical Center late Saturday after being thrown more than 220 feet by a hit-and-run driver while bicycling home from work at a Ventura pizza parlor.

Michael Gialloreto, a junior at Ventura High School, suffered multiple head injuries when a black Toyota pickup truck slammed into him as he rode along Harbor Boulevard near McGrath State Beach at 11:30 p.m. Friday, authorities said.

The boy had sold his car last week and was planning to get a new vehicle, said his step-father, John Morehouse.

Morehouse said he and his stepson had discussed whether it would be safe for the boy to ride his bicycle several miles from the Telegraph Road restaurant to the family’s home in south Oxnard.

“He was going to call home if he wanted me to bring our truck and put the bike in the back, or he was going to his girlfriend’s house,” Morehouse said. “She lives down on the beach in Ventura.”

Morehouse said Michael was probably wearing dark clothing, making him difficult to spot in the dark.

“He usually wore Levi’s and a dark shirt,” Morehouse said.

Emmett Hassan, manager of the pizza parlor where Michael began working five weeks ago, said the boy got off work at 8 p.m. Friday.

“As far as I know he was riding home,” Hassan said. “He’s a real nice kid.”

No arrests have been made, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP officers said Michael was riding south toward Oxnard when the truck struck him from behind. The boy and his mountain bike were hurled 222 feet down the road and 19 feet off the pavement, they said. The speed of the vehicle has not been determined, they said.

The truck, which debris indicates was a Toyota 4x4 or Forerunner, has not been located, officers said. A right front reflector was found at the accident scene and the truck has a damaged right front headlight and bumper, they said. No witnesses have been located.
