The eclectic Kokopelli Music Festival, featuring sounds for all ears, will flood Redondo Beach with music today from 2 to 8 p.m.

The festival launches an eight-week concert series in Veterans Park, where musicians from more than a dozen bands will donate their talent to bring the South Bay a different type of music each week.

The Kokopelli Music Festival takes its name from a Native American legend about a Toltec Indian god named Kokopelli whose flute music was said to bring fertility to the land and the Native American people, said Anil Dewan of Musicians Anonymous, the festival’s volunteer founders.

Dewan and event co-founders Jeff Hogan, Jay Hudak, Dan Krier and Roland Villapando formed Musicians Anonymous because they wanted “to make a difference in the South Bay community through music and art,” Dewan said. Kokopelli became an appropriate namesake for the festival because his power was in his music, Dewan explained.

“Music has the power to cut across boundaries and really bring people together to celebrate,” he said. The theme for the festival and the series is “to celebrate community, harmony and life.”

Today’s program will include music by jazz vocalist Debbie Talasek, blues-rock from the New Orleans Night Crawlers, reggae from Jump & Swing, classic blues from Blue Voodoo, pop from The Wonder Mints and contemporary jazz and funk from Shawn Lee & House of Groove.

The festival organizers originally planned a one-day event but the idea generated so much enthusiasm among musicians and city officials that it grew into a series.

The “Concerts in the Park” series will feature two-hour concerts, beginning at 5:30 p.m., Sunday evenings from July 18 through Aug. 29, with a final show on Thursday, Sept. 2

Classic and contemporary blues will be spotlighted July 18 by the bands of Jimmy Beasly and Max Welton. Performers for future “Concerts in the Park” will be announced.
